Oud, known as “the wood of the gods” is a genre of intense fragrance (essential oil) that’s created when a particular fungus places itself on an Aquilaria tree. It’s an extremely popular in the Middle East and other Arabic countries. It’s popularity definitely extends globally.

How is Oud Produced?

Oud is actually the resin or fungus from the Aquilaria tree. It’s formed in the heartwood of the trees when they become infected with a type of mold and secrete a resin to combat the mold. It can take many years for the wood to form a desirable aroma profile, either distilled into oil or chipped away to burn for incense.

Why is Oud So Expensive?

Oud wood is a depleting resource and takes years to produce. It’s a “prized ingredient” that is extracted from one of the rarest and most expensive woods. oud takes a long time to develop naturally. It's not something that can simply be planted and plucked, like so many other fragrance notes. Oud takes time to "cook," so to speak. It’s very common for Oud wood to be priced at $5000 USD/kilo and higher.
